Each level of the Award has an Adventurous Journey – a trip organised by the participants for the participants, to test the skills they’ve developed through the Award and build their resilience and independence. This generally takes the form of a multi-day hike and camping at night (Expedition) or journey to learn more about the location and its history, culture, and natural environment (Exploration).
This is an incredibly enjoyable aspect of the Award programme and participants often want to push themselves to achieve great things, however they don’t always have the financial resources to take up the challenge they would like to, demotivating their approach to the Award. This is because the Award is open to everyone, regardless of their circumstances, and youth from marginalised backgrounds register to give themselves greater opportunities in the future, even if they don’t have the resources in the present. So, your support means they can focus on the challenges they’ve set for themselves and worry less about how they’re going to resource them.
Adventurous Journeys are usually seven participants and up to four adult volunteers, who provide safety and supervision but are generally not involved in the Journey itself. Each level of the Award – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – has an Adventurous Journey and as the level increases, so does the length of the Journey.
There are two ways in which you can help participants from marginalised backgrounds to undertake Adventurous Journeys that they could otherwise not afford:
School Equipment Sponsorship
Given the nature of the Adventurous Journey, there is a lot of equipment that the participants need to ensure they are properly prepared to tackle the challenges they’ve set for themselves.
We have designed a package of equipment that can be donated to a marginalised school so they can use it for all their Adventurous Journeys for all levels of the Award over many years.
The package includes five tents, a gas stove, a first aid kit, 12 sleeping bags, 12 camping mattresses, 12 backpacks, and 12 flashlights, and a lockable cupboard to store it all in.
The School Equipment Sponsorship package costs Rs. 150,000 (US$1,500)
Adventurous Journey Costs Sponsorship
Each time the participants from a school are ready for an Adventurous Journey, there are a number of costs in addition to equipment that are incurred. These costs can also prohibitive for marginalised schools and significantly limit what the participants are able to undertake.
This is why we have put together the Adventurous Journey Costs Sponsorship package. This includes gas for the stove, return transportation, food for the Award Leaders, clean drinking water, and a small contingency for any additional medicines or extra water.
You may wonder why food isn’t included for the participants – this is because the ethos of the Adventurous Journey is for the participants to be as independent as possible. This means that they need to plan who will bring what food and which utensils, and to source it from their own resources. This is often through their families and extended communities, and helps to foster engagement between the participants and their communities with what they’re doing.
|Level||Days/Nights||Sponsorship Package Cost|
|Bronze||2/1||Rs. 30,000 (US$300)|
|Silver||3/2||Rs. 35,000 (US$350)|
|Gold||4/3||Rs. 40,000 (US$400)|
You can choose to sponsor one Adventurous Journey at a particular level, many at one level, or several from multiple levels – there is flexibility to suit any budget.
